On last night’s episode of the show, we got to see the top twelve guys perform and there was some stand out performances. Phillip Phillips wow’ed us with his rendition of In The Air Tonight by Phil Collins. Also woo’ing us with his performance was Reed Grimm, with his performance of Moves Like Jagger by Maroon 5 and Christina Aguilera. Also of note, the show brought back Jermaine Jones, who was the wild card for the evening. He sang Dance With My Father by Luther Vandross and it was amazing!
On tonight’s show, will they bring back a wild card for the ladies? If so, I hope it’s Lauren Gray, as she is a great singer.
So, who’s going to give us goosebumps on tonight’s show? And who will be sent home packing? Only time will tell as we dive into the competition with our live, up-to-the-minute recap as the show airs. Stay tuned, we will be live-blogging all of the action right here at Tragicomical.
First up is Chelsea Sorrell, performing Cowboy Cassanova by Carrie Underwood. Her performance is okay, but no goosebumps here. Randy Jackson questions whether or not it was a good song choice. Jennifer Lopez said she’s a fan of Chelsea, but she didn’t feel we got the chance to hear the real Chelsea. Steven Tyler said she sang good and she’s a great singer.
Erika Van Pelt is singing second, performing What About Love by Heart. She’s got some soul and Heart is a hard act to follow. Not bad! Steven said it was beautiful and she had confidence. Jennifer said she’s a power voice and was comfortable on stage, but she could’ve pushed it. Randy said she showed the confidence with restraint like Adele.
Performing next is Jen Hirsch, singing Adele’s One And Only. It was decent, but she’s not really bringing it tonight. This was not a good song choice for her. Jennifer said she did a great job and she let loose. Steven said her voice was soaring, but she’s got what it takes. Randy said she’s one of the greatest singers in this competition.
Up next is Brielle Von Hugel, singing Sittin’ On The Dock Of The Bay by Otis Redding. This performance started off as weak, but picked up a little in the middle. Steven said she has a great sense of the blues and it was beautiful. Jennifer said people underestimate her and she’s a true performer. Randy said he was worried with the first part of the song, but when she got to the sweet spot, she could really sing.
Hallie Day is performing next, doing her version of Feeling Good by Nina Simone. She started off nicely, but in the middle was kind of wishy-washy. She made up for it with the end of the song, though. Randy said he loved it. Jennifer said she looks like a star and she sounded beautiful. Steven said her voice is old-fashioned and nice going for her. Randy she’s got the voice and wondered what type of singer she wanted to be.
Skylar Laine is up next, singing Stay With Me by Faces. I like the song, it was a good choice for her. Randy said she’s a rockin’ great country singer. He called her Reba mixed with Kelly Clarkson. He loves her energy and the performance. Jennifer said she loves her energy and it’s like Tina Turner turned country. Steven said she was on fire and she’s a pistol. He told her to keep it up!
Baylie Brown is up next, performing Lonestar’s Amazed. Not bad. Steven said it wasn’t the best song she could’ve picked, but he enjoyed it and she’s very pretty. Jennifer said it was a little shaky and she agrees with Steven. Randy said it was shaky and pitchy and she never seized control of the song.
Hollie Cavanaugh is up next, singing Christina Aguilera’s song Reflection. The song is okay, but we’re still not feeling any of the ladies tonight all that much. Steven said she did it again and hit the notes so perfectly. Jennifer said she can win this and her voice is that strong. Randy said she’s one of their favorites since the beginning of the season. He said she tried to slay the biggest dragon with that song, but she can work on it a little bit.
Haley Johnsen is singing next, performing her version of Sweet Dreams by the Eurythmics. She’s nailing the song’s weirdness factor very nicely, but at times it got a little scream-y. Jennifer said she hopes America could hear all of the special things she was doing with her voice. She wasn’t sure that the song was a good choice, because it’s such a well known song. Steven said she pulled it through and he loved how she acted on stage. Randy said it was a bit of a nightmare for him, instead of a dream. It was pitchy all over the place and it’s hard to do Annie Lenox.
Up next is Shannon Magrane, singing Go Light Your World by Kathy Trocoli. She’s definitely got talent! I’d never heard this song before, but she’s got some pipes. Randy said she came out swingin’. She has so much promise and she’s calm and cool. He was impressed with her vibrato and he’s a fan. Jennifer said she sings with such passion for a 16-year-old. She got goosebumps. Steven said it was beautiful and gorgeous.
Jessica Sanchez is up next, singing I Love You (Perfect Man) by Jennifer Hudson. I wasn’t feeling the song as she began singing it, but it really picked up in the middle. Randy said she can really sing and she’s one of the best of the last two nights. Jennifer said she’s got the attitude and the moves. She said the whole thing was beyond her years. Steven said she’s got exceptional timing and her voice is perfect.
Performing last is Elise Testone, singing Adele’s song One And Only. She’s got a nice, raspy voice. I like this version of the song. Steven said it was from the heart and bluesy. Jennifer said her tone was so much different than anyone else in the competition. She said Elise is one to watch. Randy said she’s a force to be reckoned with in the competition.
